Damsels in distress are Disney’s bread and butter. But Belle was one refreshing example of a girl going against the grain, ducking her poor provincial town for a mysterious castle in the great, wide somewhere. Sure, she was held captive by Beast, but it was an adventure at least. Belle’s smarts, the lovable characters, and the killer soundtrack — which won the 1992 Oscar for Best Original Music Score — make Beauty and the Beast one of the most beloved animated movies of all time. Its revered place in cinema, romantic story, and beloved songs made it a perfect match for Broadway, where it’s enjoyed successful shows since its debut in 1994.
