The Carbonell Awards are basically the Oscars for South Florida theater. And if all goes well this year, Actors’ Playhouse and GableStage are gonna kick all the other local thespian companies in the pants. Actors’ Playhouse, in particular, leads all theaters with an amazing 11 nominations for its 2010 production of Miss Saigon. It’s the Carbonells’ Avatar! Only without the cartoonish plot and veiled racism. Plus Amy Miller Brennan has received two best supporting actress nods for her portrayals in Actors’ Playhouse’s Miss Saigon and Oliver! Another big nominee is GableStage. The theater company’s Joe Adler has been nominated twice for best director. See who goes home with the giant ring trophies at the 35th annual Carbonell Awards ceremony this Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Later, head to the afterparty at the Green Room (109 SW Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Admission is free with an awards show ticket.
