For those who yearn to wear capes and powdered wigs while milling around onstage behind opera stars, today is your day. Florida Grand Opera is holding open auditions for supernumeraries — otherwise known as extras — for its spring performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto and Georges Bizet’s Carmen. “We like all body types; any shape, size, age, and color,” says Sherrie Dee Brewer, FGO’s production stage manager. “We like for the community to become more involved with the opera company.” Although you don’t need experience, “it is important for people to have rhythm since we are music-based,” Brewer adds. If you are selected, you will be required to attend rehearsals and performances, and will receive a small fee Brewer says is “probably enough to cover the gas.” Don’t fret if you don’t make the cut. “There will be a huge demand for supers next season,” she says. “It is a great way for us to break down the wall of what opera is.” Auditions take place today from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Opera Guild Building. Call 305-854-1643, or visit www.fgo.org.
