French sculptor Elyan Biscayn doesn’t need to wander beyond her yard to find inspiration. Since she moved to South Florida, palm trees have been her muse. The artist applies resins to fronds to form carved and twisted shapes that she later mounts on geometric pedestals of marble and steel. Her PalmArt Collection is composed of curved, undulating pieces that often appear suspended in space and possess a fluidity combining nature’s beauty with abstract forms. Her compatriot Christian Bernard, a.k.a. Narbero, has gained a following for churning out violent eruptions of thick paint and kaleidoscopic color notable for their dramatic intensity. Tonight at 7:00 the duo will showcase recent works during “Women of the World” at Damien B. Contemporary Art Center, with a percentage of the exhibit’s art sales benefiting the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation.
In a series that prompted this show’s name, Bernard is unveiling a suite of paintings capturing women worldwide wearing indigenous costumes. “He has created stunning portraits of women from China, Africa, Europe — all over — that are beautifully detailed,” says Damien B. “These paintings are incredibly colorful and spill over with energy.” Through September 25.
