The Dance Now Ensemble is like the June Cleaver-meets-Courtney Love of local dance troupes. Now in its seventh season, the traditional yet edgy group presents Donne: Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Lovers, a performance that spans the history of dance from classical ballet to avant-garde. Its perfect fusion of modern dance, jazz, ballet, and yoga creates a visually enthralling expression that is only matched by the director’s eclectic musical selections.
Donne translated from Italian means female, which gets to the heart of this performance. Co-choreographers Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini were inspired by the intimate stories woven by the predominantly female company. Spanning the themes of love, marriage, births, deaths, and struggle, Donnebecomes poetry in motion. Baumgarten says it’s the story of every woman, and the movements reveal emotions with which women of all ages can identify.
