Miami January 2017 Restaurant Openings and Closings

Welcome to the end of the first month of 2017. As the weather cools, Miami’s restaurant scene is heating up, with more than two dozen establishments opening in January. Both Mignonette and Pubbelly Sushi opened second locations, and chef Paula DaSilva returned to Miami-Dade with the opening of Artisan Beach House at the Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour. Plus, New York and New Jersey favorite Son Cubano opened in Coral Gables.

Support Mexico in Miami: Five Hot Places for Tequila, Tacos, and More

It looks like Donald Trump is building that wall. Just a few days into his presidency, Trump has already signed an executive order to build the wall — possibly having Americans pay for it by issuing a 20 percent tax on Mexican imports — including beer, avocados, tequila, and mezcal.Already, relations with Mexico seem strained, with Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña cancelling a meeting with Trump, set for next week.  The two leaders did have an hour-long phone call today to discuss America’s trade deficit with Mexico. A statement released by the Mexican government said that the two leaders had “clear and very public differences” on “sensitive” issues. Whether or not a tax is imposed on some of our favorite food and drink items remains to be seen. For the moment, though, it’s a good idea to eat all the guacamole and tacos and drink all the mezcal and margaritas we can.  Here are the hottest places to grab your tacos and tequila while you can!

Carb Up for the Miami Marathon With These Pre- and Post-Race Deals

The 15th-annual Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon will take place this Sunday, when nearly 25,000 runners will fill the streets of Miami and Miami Beach on a pedestrian tour of our fair cities. If you’re running the full 26.2 miles or the half (still a formidable 13.1 miles), you’ll need fuel. Traditionally, the evening before a big race, runners carbo-load. Basically, that means scarfing down a steaming bowl of pasta in an effort to store energy for the miles to come. A few restaurants in Miami and Miami Beach are offering special pre-marathon dinners, with two establishments celebrating your accomplishment with post-marathon deals. See you on the course!

A Trump Mexican Import Tax Could See Miami Pay More for Avocados, Tequila, and Beer

Most presidential candidates make far-fetched campaign promises. Donald Trumps’ main doozy was erecting a “yuge” wall between Mexico and the United States and then making our southern neighbors pay for it. Usually, these pie-in-the-sky ideas fall by the wayside once the real day-to-day job of leading the free world becomes a reality. Trump, however, is hell-bent on building that wall…

Son Cubano to Open in Coral Gables

Years ago, when New York’s Meatpacking District was transitioning from a row of butchers to a trendy nightlife hub, Son Cubano was one of the pioneers in the neighborhood. The restaurant, which featured Latin beats, mojitos, and Cuban fare, was considered a colorful and exotic place for Manhattanites to fantasize about life in a tropical clime. But the Meatpacking District changed, and the original Son Cubano moved to New Jersey. In its original NYC place? An Uggs store. Now, Son Cubano is coming to Coral Gables.

McDonald’s to Give Away Limited-Edition Bottles of Big Mac Special Sauce Tomorrow

McDonald’s is famous for many things: French fries, burgers, shakes, and Donald Trump’s favorite — the “Fish Delight” (known to everyone else as the Filet-O-Fish). But of all the Golden Arches’ menu items, the one that’s loved best and filled with the most intrigue is the Big Mac: two all-beef patties topped with “Special Sauce.” For years, McDonald’s had never disclosed what composes its Special Sauce — until now.

Mignonette Uptown Opens Friday With Fancy Seafood in a Dining-Car Setting

Seafood fans in Northeast Miami-Dade are in for a culinary treat when Mignonette Uptown opens this Friday, January 6. The restaurant, a partnership between chef Daniel Serfer and Ryan Roman, fills the space formerly occupied by Gourmet Diner, located at 13951 Biscayne Blvd. in North Miami Beach. The new branch of Mignonette takes much from the original Edgewater location, including a marquee featuring available oysters and fresh seafood served “plain” or “fancy,” but the railcar motif of the North Miami Beach spot provided inspiration for some menu changes.
