There is a new lunch menu at 660 at the Angler’s, and the item getting the most hype is the Hemingway burger — “a blend of sirloin, brisket, and short rib, baby arugula, tomato, caramelized onions and mushrooms, Vermont cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and 660 sauce.” So naturally I wanted to check out the latest hamburger in town, even if it’s fast becoming something akin to checking out the latest grain of sand on the beach. Little did I know that in the time it would take to be served this Hemingway hamburger, I could have read halfway through The Old Man and the Sea.
Some rather amazing numbers concerning lunch at the Angler’s:
30: Minutes it took before I was able to flag down a waiter and inquire what was taking so long. “I’m sorry about that. It will be right out,” I was told.
15: Minutes it actually took, after the first half-hour, for the burger to be served.

25: Minutes before anybody noticed “the machine was down,” according to our waiter, explaining why the orders never made it to the kitchen.
3: Waiters on staff.
3: Diners, including me, sitting on the pleasant patio. The other couple was sitting there when I arrived. (Nobody was dining indoors.)
3: People who had to wait 45 minutes for orders to arrive.
0: Waiters/managers who noticed, after half an hour, that nobody in the restaurant was being served any food.
0: Pieces of bread, edamame beans, or something to perhaps munch on while waiting. No manager came by to apologize either.
16: Dollars I was charged for the burger. Not until I got home and checked the menu did it became clear I was overcharged; at lunch the burger is supposed to be $14. The hamburger, incidentally, was so-so — tasted like a regular eight-ounce patty with a lot of tasty stuff on top. Except it came medium-well rather than medium-rare as ordered — and no way I was sending it back. I couldn’t help but overhear the person at the next table, who had also ordered the Hemingway, politely tell the waiter that his burger was overcooked. Should I mention that my water glass wasn’t refilled?
2.88/1.44: Dollars for 18 percent automatic gratuity/tax.
20.32: Dollars for one hamburger with fries; tap water was complimentary.
Guess I should note that lunch is Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — although I sure won’t be returning.
