Restaurateur Stephen Starr (Steak 954 in Fort Lauderdale) is set to debut his second South Florida Restaurant, Makoto at Bal Harbour Shops, in late March. Why are we genuinely optimistic? Namesake chef Makoto Okuwa is a disciple of the famed Chef Morimoto. After having dined at Morimoto Napa, we can hardly contain our glee. More to come on Makoto Okuwa and his new restaurant in short order at Short Order.
Timon Balloo of Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill, which was recently nominated for a James Beard Best New Restaurant award, will be cooking at the James Beard Awards Gala and Reception on May 9. The event, hosted by Tom Colicchio, Ming Tsi, and Traci Des Jardins, will take place at the Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. Timon is the sole chef from Florida this year to be given the honor of preparing the food — a well-deserved honor, we might add.
Kosta Restaurant has recently opened nearby Mary Brickell Village (1250 S. Miami Avenue). Specialty of the house is the dozen ceviches ($11.75 to $17), but the South American menu offers everything from lobster bisque ($11 a bowl) to coconut snapper ($20) to paella for two ($45). Appetizers include shrimp cocktail ($10) and fried calamari ($9.50). Lunch, served noon to 3 pm, looks to be the better deal: Choice of 9 entrees (2 of which are ceviche) with one of six sides for $10.
