With Miami’s looming sea level crisis, it’s more important than ever that local leadership – and residents – wake up to the  realities of our environmental issues. And food is one important inroad to a sustainable lifestyle.

Oolite, Kris Wessel’s Miami Beach hotspot, is all about sourcing locally, serving environmentally-friendly vegan eats, and embracing a responsible approach to food service. This Wednesday, it’s showing its commitment to Mother Earth by hosting an opening party for the Miami & the Beaches Environmental Film Festival.

The festival doesn’t officially start until April 14, but the festivities will kick off this Wednesday with Oolite’s fete.

Attendees to the sustainable shindig, which kicks off at 7 p.m., will get to sip Açaí cocktails from Veev and nibble on healthy bites courtesy of Kris Wessel.

“I’m preparing a few pass-arounds for the cocktail party including vegan risotto, grilled baby eggplant and tostones topped with roasted pepper caponata,” says Wessel.

“We also have a few non vegan items with our smoked wahoo on gluten free rice cracker and and lechon roti with spicy guava sauce.”

The party is in keeping with the festival’s overarching theme of environmental sustainability. This year, there’s a particular focus on films showcasing climate change and sea level rise issues-particularly relevant to Miami.

Oolite’s guests will also mix and mingle with the festival’s sponsors and partners, the ECOMB Team and leaders of local NGOs.
