While Philippe Chow is ostensibly still in a war with Mr. Chow in Miami, New York City and Los Angeles, the posh Hamptons still seem to be the sole domain of Philippe Chow. Last summer, Philippe Chow debuted a summertime outpost of their gourmet Chinese restaurant concept in East Hampton. This resort at the Eastern end of Long Island is known for famous people (think Steven Spielberg, Jerry Seinfeld and Gwyneth Paltrow) and trendy restaurants. On the weekends, the glitterati did indeed patronize Philippe Chow in droves to people-watch, snack on bright orange chicken satay and sip on lychee martinis.
However, it remained a mystery as to whether or not Philippe Chow would once again open its doors in East Hampton after being shuttered all winter. After all, the summer before, the same space was rented out by China Grill owner Jeffrey Chodorow, who declined to renew after one season. Question solved: The eatery relaunches on May 25, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. Now, all of the Hamptons crowd (which includes many snow bird Miamians) will have a place to eat Peking duck while commiserating over how bad the traffic is on the LIE. If you are heading to East Hampton, be sure to book a table on the outdoor patio, where the scene is not as claustrophobic as it is indoors.
