Last year, Pubbelly and Eating House combined forces for what was the first pop-up to correlate with Miami Spice.
Now, the Pubbelly Miami Spice pop-up returns with a new chef pairing. This year, Pubbelly chef and two-time James Beard semi-finalist Jose Mendin teams up with Makoto Okuwa of Stephen Starr’s Bal Harbour Makoto restaurant for a special one-night-only event.

On Tuesday, August 27, the two chefs will prepare a traditional Izakaya dinner, with each chef alternating courses. The price for the special “Japanese pub” evening? The regular Miami Spice price of $33 per person (not including tax or gratuity). Dinner is served from 6 p.m. – 12:30 a.m., and reservations are accepted for groups of eight or more only.
The menu is still being finalized, but whatever these two chefs turn out is sure to be praiseworthy, with modern takes on traditional Japanese fare.
Chef Mendin told Short Order that he chose to do his annual Spice pop-up with Makoto, “because I am a big fan of his and a big fan of Izakaya cooking. I love that he is a modern Japanese chef and I truly admire his style.”
This is the only Miami Spice pop-up the Pubbelly boys are planning this year, although the two chefs are already talking about co-hosting another pop-up — this time with Makoto taking the home field advantage at his Bal Harbour restaurant.
