Only 75 kids got the chance to sit in Jamie Oliver’s presentation at Kohl’s Fun & Fit as a Family Saturday at Jungle Island. At 12:30 p.m. a line already snaked outside the room where Oliver’s 1:30 p.m. presentation took place, but to some parents’ discontent, most didn’t get in.
Several students from Booker T. Washington Senior High School in Overtown attended the presentation. They were invited by Oliver, who visited the school Friday and ate collard greens, baked barbecue chicken, and peas and rice prepared by the students.
Adel Hatten, a Miami resident, was in the room with her husband and two children. “We thought this would be a good chance for the kids to learn about healthy eating, even though what they’re giving out is not that healthy,” she said.
Samples included potato chips, coconut water, Pollo Tropical chicken and rice, Mr. Q Cucumber soda, and Kefir smoothies, probably the most healthful offering there.
