Haven’t you heard?! Today is National Food Day! At this moment food-related activities are attracting the masses nationwide. This morning at the University of Miami is the grand opening of the UM Farmer’s Market, where Farm Fresh Miami and many other sustainable producers will offer up fresh goodies.
From 10 a.m. to noon, a Community Food Organization Fair will start at the UC Lower Lounge. Later in the day, around 5 p.m., a panel of local food experts will take questions on food issues. And wrapping up the day at 7 p.m. they will host a film screening of food justice movies.
Mara D’Amico, a UM Food Day representative, told us, “Food Day is a national grassroots campaign to reduce diet-related disease by promoting healthy foods, support sustainable farms and cut subsidies to agribusiness, expand access to food and end hunger, and much more.”
Adds Ellie Kreiger, star of Food Network’s Healthy Appetite, “Food day is a chance to celebrate the power good food has to nourish us and bring us together.”
