There’s something to be said for pairing things. Do it right and you could end up with peanut butter in your chocolate. But put together the wrong duo and you might as well slam a shooter of orange juice in a pint of milk, Irish car-bomb-style. Then there’s a bill such as Empire State DJ/producer Victor Calderone and Philipp Jung of German production duo M.A.N.D.Y. the same night, this Saturday at Club Space. They are certainly two distinct flavors, but do they really taste great together?
Calderone runs Space’s terrace, so it’s a good idea to put on your most macho strut if approaching the dance floor. Remixer of Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, Madonna, and many others, Calderone is known to lay down a thick tribal drum foundation, the kind that picks your feet up and turns your ass out. Yeah, it’s sexual. Woven atop the unrelenting big-room beat marathon are the hallmarks of itchy tech house, obscenely vocal hard house, and swooning prog-trance. Calderone brings out the fabulous bois and their female appendages and leaves them mascara-streaked and tweaked.
On a less bloated tip is M.A.N.D.Y., AKA Berlin-based Get Physical cofounders Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung. The latter will appear solo to represent the group in Space’s techno loft. There’s certainly an element of camp in M.A.N.D.Y.’s blend of techno electro-house. But inside the moody sounds of this machine-striated funk are oh-so-German moments when pleasingly strident sounds burrow through spacious melodies.
So those are the options: Get pounded by a circuit club pro, or get stylishly fondled by a rakish Continental. Do you want more glitter or gutter? It’s all different strokes for different folks.
