Two years ago, during Winter Music Conference, the now-defunct Snatch almost burned to the ground. Oh, there wasn’t a fire. But there was a hell of a lot of heat. And it all sprang from a gang of ragtag head spinners that ride sunder the name Crooklyn Clan.
The core of the Clan is DJ Riz and DJ Sizzahandz, who first started dropping party breaks for the notorious Nervous Records way back in ’93. A decade later, the tag team backed Fatman Scoop and Faith Evans on the hit single “Be Faithful,” a track that’s about as loyal to the tradition of abandon as it gets. That same year, the Clan backed the Fatman on “It Takes Scoop,” and everything was all right indeed.
Along the way, the group assembled a posse of some of the most throwdown-ready spinners on the planet, and its numbers are growing still. Among the expanded Clan are Bay Area breakists the Rockit! Scientists, Sugar Ray’s DJ Homicide, Strong Island’s DJ Boneshaker, San Diego’s DJ Scooter, and fellow New Yorkers DJ Stitch and DJ Beatbreaker. The family tree also now includes Miami’s own Discotech, comprising Danny Daze and Joe Maz, two of the town’s most respected spin men. Here’s a recent top ten list from DJ Riz.
