On March 29, Arcade Fire lit up the Hotel Oloffson in Port-au-Prince with covers from Cyndi Lauper (“Girls Just Want to Have Fun”), the Rolling Stones (“The Last Time”) and Creedence Clearwater Revival (“Who’ll Stop the Rain”), plus songs off each of their own albums, including last year’s Grammy-winning The Suburbs.
It was an intimate, barely advertised show with an audience of only 250. Tickets cost just $13. And most of those singing and dancing were expat aid workers looking for a few minutes of relaxation.
The show’s second half starred Richard Morse’s Haitian voudou-rock band, RAM. Morse, the owner of the Oloffson, is the American-raised cousin of Haiti’s new president-elect, Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly.
