Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci (pronounced “monkey”) has been around for ten years. The foursome’s unusual name is a perfect reflection of its ultraquirky sound. In contrast to its bleak, albeit verdant Welsh surroundings, its eighth album, Sleep/Holiday, is sunny and bright. The tranquil air is encouraged by singer Euros Childs’s whispered, choir-like emissions. A pastoral feel abounds, with a perky harmonica melody setting the tone for the happy opener (although you wouldn’t know it from the title) “Waking for Winter.” The tempo picks up on “Mow the Lawn,” which gives way to the hoedown that is “Country.” A frisky piano plinks its way through “Eyes of Green, Green Green”; then the album shifts into a leisurely mode before slowing down to a funereal pace with the eerie church organs on “Pretty as a Bee” and rests with the quiet, almost comatose “Red Rocks.”
