It’s Tuesday and you know what that means: Rock Star Karaoke at Transit Lounge. Yes, we’re sure you already know that every Tuesday you can take the embarrassing display you put on practicing to Rock Band in your living room on the road and actually embarrass yourself in public. Okay … embarrass yourself in new and creative ways in public.

But you know what’s even better than realizing your lifelong dream of belting out Pat Benatar as loud as can with the backing of an actual in-the-flesh band? Actually getting to witness some real talent in the process.

Enter Josie Ovalle. There’s a pretty good chance you might not know her yet, at least if her Myspace is any indication. But hopefully that’s all about to change, because this talented young singer-songwriter is going to be playing at Transit tonight in celebration of her newly minted EP The Mixed Tape.

Indie-alt rock gets done right as she strums her guitar, laying simple but striking backdrops for skillfully crafted songs that exhibit surprising lyrical dexterity. She handles with equal aplomb plaintive and fiery, as on “Lungs,” and positive hopefulness, like on “Someday,” and earnestness reigns throughout. Her songwriting is strong, not the typical bedroom producer variety. This girl is good. Damn good. And did we mention she can sing?

Do yourself a favor and head to Transit tonight. You can take in Josie’s promising talent and still embarrass yourself once you’ve drank too much and attempted to hit those high notes to your fellow patrons’ chagrin.

Josie Ovalle. 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 3. Transit Lounge, 729 SW 1st Ave., Miami. Admission is free; age 21 and up. 305-377-4628; transitlounge.us
