British DJ, producer, and A&R man Matt Tolfrey has staked his place in the international electronic dance music scene since first launching the esteemed Leftroom imprint in 2005. Home to acclaimed emerging artists like Glimpse, Inxec, and Marc Ashken, Leftroom encapsulates the sounds of a new generation bringing a deep and forward-thinking flair to the tech-house form.
Since Leftroom’s launch, Tolfrey has gone on to host a regular label night at legendary London music hub T Bar, alongside those of local luminaries like Andrew Weatherall and Craig Richards.
As a producer, Tolfrey crafts his own singular strain of electronic funk, a smooth hybrid of deep house and techno streamlined through a stark, stripped-down minimal style. As a DJ, he specializes in deep and sultry peak-time dance cuts, best enjoyed in the confines of a dark club at the height of the night. It’s no surprise, then, that he’s made his sets well known at underground hotspots the world over, from London’s Fabric and Berlin’s Watergate, to Miami’s Electric Pickle, where he will return on Friday for an exclusive performance courtesy of SAFE.
Matt Tolfrey. With Lazaro Casanova, Conway, and Richard Burn. 10 p.m. Friday, June 11. Electric Pickle, 2826 N. Miami Ave., Miami. Limited presale tickets are available for $12 from wantickets.com; otherwise admission is $15 at the door. Age 21 and up; 305-456-5613; electricpicklemiami.com
