Back in the summer of 2011, we here at Crossfade gave you a heads up about this pretty cool little weekly show on WDNA 88.9 FM radio and five major reasons you should tune in for it.

Well, we sure hope you took our advice then, because the Sunday Coolout has officially been dropped by the radio station this month. And if you didn’t catch the show while it was still on the air, you missed out on some truly groovy out-of-the-box musical programming by Miami DJs Sire Esq. and Maneuvers.

“We tried to fill a void on the local airwaves, introduced listeners to music rarely heard on South Florida radio, brought in internationally respected guests and supported local and independent artists from around the globe,” Sire Esq. and Maneuvers tell Crossfade via email. “We did it for the people, and hope we opened up an audience to different musical interests and provided a memorable radio experience.”

So why was the show dropped? As the hosts put it: “With our base as DJs, we set out to bridge the gap between jazz and other genres, like soul, funk, R&B, house, world, and downtempo that could reach a wide audience from young to old. [But] on WDNA, which is primarily a jazz station, we had boundaries of not being able to play certain music.”

Indeed, times are hard for the musically open-minded in this era of profit-driven big media and Top 40 radio domination. We hope this duo gets back on the air soon.
