Octogenarians, rejoice! Fellow 80-something and Great Depression survivor Tony Bennett will be at a South Florida casino for a two-night stand this weekend. Both Friday and Saturday, Anthony Dominick Benedetto will leave his heart in Hollywood when he softly rocks the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Bennett is one of just a handful of artists who’ve had records chart in seven decades. He’s won 17 Grammys, including two in 2012. And he was one of the last people to work with Amy Winehouse. But his contributions to American music pale in comparison to the clout he has with world leaders.
According to Bennett, President George W. Bush admitted to him that it was a mistake to invade Iraq. Bush opened up to him at the 2005 Kennedy Center Honors, where the crooner was being recognized for his achievements. “He told me personally that night. He says, ‘I think I made a mistake,'” Bennett recently recalled on Howard Stern’s satellite radio program.
Of course, a Bush spokesperson called Bennett’s account “flatly wrong,” adding that the president “never said that to Tony Bennett or anyone else.”
