What do President Barack H. Obama, reggaetonero Daddy Yankee, and Sesame Street Live: Elmo’s Super Heroes have in common?
No mucho.
But a ton of Muppets, “Lovumba,” and POTUS did help BankUnited Center land a prime position on Venues Today’s 2013 Florida Top Spots list, a compilation of the best venues in the Sunshine State based on total gross sales, attendance, and shows between April 2012 and March 2013.

“What helps to put our venue ahead in the rankings is that Global Spectrum is very aggressive in acquiring high-profile shows and is very creative in marketing these events,” says BankUnited Center General Manager Lorenzo Muniz. “We’ve also taken advantage of the fact that Global Spectrum manages UCF Arena and the USF Sundome in Florida, which allows us to route more touring acts through all three venues.”
BankUnited was the only South Florida venue of its kind to break the top five. And it recently became the only major venue to carry a regional bank’s namesake, eliminating embarrassing mix-ups at the box office.
“The name change of the BankAtlantic Center to the BB&T Center has definitely helped to lessen the confusion between our two venues for South Florida patrons,” say Muniz. “We no longer have to worry about concert-goers showing up at the wrong event and it has allowed us to increase our own identity as a major venue in the market.”
