Always careful to take up practical, non-partisan causes instead of throwing partisan bombs, Sen. Bill Nelson has made Florida’s invasive python problem one of his key issues. So now the man we’ve dubbed Senator Spacesnakes is actually taking on the problem directly. He’s joining Florida’s controversial python hunting challenge, and is going to go and try to kill himself some snakes.
Today he’s actually out with a group with the University of Florida hunting for snakes.
“He’s had a hand in drawing attention to the problem and it has, in fact, proven to be a very serious problem,” spokesman Dan McLaughlin told The Buzz. “Going out in the swamp with the heat and the mosquitoes and the snakes is something that puts him in touch with Florida and its natural state.”
Nelson has actually been down with the idea of a giant python hunting party for years. Back in 2009 he wrote a letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar supporting such an idea.
