SEC probes and baffling aesthetic choices aside, the Miami Marlins really do deserve credit for keeping good on their promise of upping their payroll and making the team a serious contender. A day after adding prized shortstop Jose Reyes, ESPN is reporting that the Fish have made a 10-year contract offer to Albert Pujols, the best first baseman the league has to offer. Update: The deal may be worth more than $200 million.

Although the exact terms have not been revealed, it would likely be a monster contract. Word is Pujols would like to be the highest paid first baseman in the league, if not close to it.

Though, unlike with Reyes, the Marlins may have serious competition. The Chicago Cubs have also reportedly made an offer to the three time NL MVP, and the St. Louis Cardinals would like to resign their star. Whether they’re ready to cough up the money remains to be seen.
Update: Fox Sports reporter Jon Morosi tweets that the deal is worth more than $200 million, and yet some circles of the sports press are starting to blabber that Pujols may just be using the Marlin’s interest to drive up his price with the Cubs or his current Cardinals.
