Several students with disabilities were forced to miss school today because someone broke into a school bus lot over the holiday weekend and stole batteries from more than 30 buses. Most of the buses were specially equipped to handle wheelchairs and transport disabled students to school.
More than 100 batteries were stolen from the lot on South Fourth Street and 70th Avenue in West Miami-Dade, according to WSVN. Each bus uses three batteries, so about 32 buses were out of commission this morning.
“We specialize in handicapped kids,” bus driver Ricardo Valdez told the news station. “They couldn’t go to school because most of the parents don’t have a vehicle to transport wheelchairs. That’s why we give them transportation.”
