Remember a few years ago when it seemed everyone in Miami was getting spammed text messages by someone promising to buy their “junk car?” Yeah, well the Florida Senate is looking at a way to make it easier for Floridians to get out of receiving spam by adding text messages to the “Do Not Call” registry.
Under the current law, solicitors are barred from making calls to Floridians who sign up for the “Do Not Call” registry. However, some solicitors have found a loophole through the law by texting phones instead.
The Florida Senate voted unanimously today to approve a bill that would add texts to the registry. The House version, meanwhile, has passed all committees and is awaiting a vote on the House floor that is likely to pass.
By the way, the company responsible for the rash of “junk car” texts in 2012 eventually was targeted with a class-action lawsuit.

Those “junk car” texts have since died off, but if the bill passes the house and is signed by Gov. Rick Scott it would ensure that Miamians would never be hit with such a text spam plague again.
