During today’s Tree Summit at Jungle Island, city leaders discovered that Miami doesn’t have many trees — all those buildings have gotten in the way.
“I was shocked to find our tree canopy is very, very low,” said City Commissioner Joe Sanchez, who wore a green-hued suit and a grass-colored tie.
During the half-day-long seminar, city leaders extolled the virtues of a new “canopy analysis” that will map all of the city’s trees via GIS. Mayor Manny Diaz accepted $100K from the Home Depot Foundation to plant trees and everyone was still on a green high from last week’s Florida Summit on Climate Change.
