Earlier today, someone hacked into the Facebook accounts of several Major League Baseball teams and the Marlins were not spared. For a brief moment, the Marlins Facebook page promised the first 10,000 fans in attendance at the next game that they’d receive a free “fighting pit bull.” Updated.
Pit bulls, the dog breed not the rapper, are banned in Miami-Dade County. That fact was underscored earlier this year when Marlins pitcher Mark Buehrle moved his family to Broward so he could keep his pet pit.
Several other teams’ Facebook accounts were hacked as well. According to Deadspin, the Yankee’s page announced that Derek Jeter would undergo “sex reassignment surgery.” The Padres strongly discouraged attendance by the handicapped, and the Cubs proclaimed “Fuck Bill Murray.”
So is this the work of a hacker, or maybe some pissed off employee who works for MLB’s social media operation?

Update: Turns out it was an inside job. MLB released the following statement.
Recently, several Pages made unauthorized posts as a result of actions from a single rogue administrator of these Pages. Our team responded quickly and worked with our partners to eliminate the spam caused by this attack. This was an unique, isolated incident and we are always working to improve our systems to better protect our users and their data.
