Miami-Dade Police say they had no choice but to shoot and kill a 20-year-old bipolar man after a Taser malfunction.
The incident happened at the Kendallwood Villas complex near FIU’s south campus. Federico Osorio’s mother had called police claiming that her son had threatened to kill her and his sister.
A neighbor tells The Miami Herald that police were a frequent presence at the home, as Osorio would often have outbursts and lock himself in his room. Tuesday’s incident however ended fatally.
When police arrived at about 11:30 a.m. yesterday morning Osorio became aggressive. Two officers attempted to use Tasers to subdue Osorio. However, one of the Tasers apparently malfunctioned and failed to stop Osorio. Police say the man then came at them with knives in his hands and they had no choice but to shoot to kill. He was declared dead on the scene.

Daniela Osorio, the victim’s sister, then came out of the apartment later in the evening and told The Herald that her brother had suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. She claimed police were aware of his condition and went a “bit too far.”
No officers were injured in the incident.
