Complete economic recovery still stubbornly refuses to come to Miami-Dade County. Even as Florida’s unemployment rate dropped to the lowest point its been since August 2008, Miami-Dade’s rose for the month of October to 8.5 percent.
Florida’s unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in October. That’s down 0.1 percent since the previous month and down a full 1.5 percent from October of 2012.
Miami-Dade’s meanwhile sits at 8.5 percent, up from 8.3 percent from September.
Though, that’s down 0.7 percent from October 2012, that doesn’t mean more jobs have come to Miami-Dade. The number of jobs in October of 2012 in Miami-Dade was 1,196,923. This October that number was down to 1,173,904, which means, yep, we’ve lost 23,019 jobs.

That includes 2,100 jobs in construction and 5,100 in the public sector. Though, the county has seen a steady increase in payroll jobs over the last year.
So why did the unemployment rate drop 0.7 percent? The number of workers actively looking for jobs in Miami-Dade County also shrunk in that same timeframe from by 34,628. That includes people who have decided to look elsewhere for work, or people who have just given up looking for work.
