Another sign things are slowly getting better in the 305: Miami International Airport reports that 9.3 million passengers somehow survived getting through the airport in the first three months of 2011. That’s the highest number of passengers during that part of the year ever for MIA, and a 6.1 percent jump from last year.
While MIA notoriously ranks last on several airport quality surveys, that hasn’t hampered travel to the airport, even in these economically troubled times.
Though, like most things, it seems people from abroad are helping Miami tourism and business travel. International passenger traffic jumped 8 percent, while domestic passenger traffic rose only 4.5 percent.
The Sun-Sentinel says a strong performance by American Airlines has helped the numbers. That carrier operates its Latin American and Caribbean hub out of MIA.
