Remember Edward Hugh Okun? He’s the 58-year-old Miami businessman who tricked hundreds of people out of $126 million through two fraudulent Richmond, Virginia companies that promised to defer capital gains taxes.
As scams go, everything was rosy until he married Simone Bolani, a 20-something Miami Beach salon owner. When the two divorced, Okun needed to produce $6 million for Bolani. Problem is he didn’t have the money. He had been living off the money his clients had been giving him. That’s when things began to unravel.
This past March, he was found guilty on 23 counts, including fraud and money laundering.
He faced a 400-year sentence behind bars. Today, he got 100 years instead. Which means he’ll be out a long time before Madoff… oh, wait.
