This past Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. hundreds of locals, visitors and random people joined hands between Fourth and Eighth Streets to protest offshore oil drilling and encourage use of renewable resources. The event was part of Hands Across the Sand, a global day of action. Groups including the Surfrider Foundation, the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, 1Sky, ECOMB, the Urban Paradise Guild, and Environment Florida also brought tents, T-shirts, and petitions in support of the effort. Young and old wore armbands printed with “No oil 2030” and chanted “No oil offshore” as a smaller group of protesters walked a large, black plastic tarp down the beach to symbolize the treacherous oil spill that is spreading throughout the Gulf.
