Natacha Seijas was right to worry about her name appearing on the same recall ballot as Carlos Alvarez. She was swept up in the voter tsunami that also took out the now former county mayor. Many local political pundits didn’t give Miami Voice, the political action committee that sought Seijas’s recall along with four other commissioners, a snowball’s chance of dethroning the Wicked Witch of the Northwest, who in 2006 easily defeated an attempt to unseat her.
With only $20,000 in campaign contributions, Miami Voice out-hustled Seijas’s political machine, powered by the county’s employee unions, lobbyists, and developers. Of course, it helped that the recall group was able to coordinate efforts with billionaire Norman Braman’s recall of Alvarez.
Last night, as Miami Voice volunteers gathered at the Billiard Club in Miami Lakes to celebrate, some of the recallers were still stunned they pulled it off. Among the Seijas rebels were environmental activist and Eye on Miami blogger Alan Farago, who has been fighting Seijas since her support of a commercial airport at the former Homestead Air Force Base in the 1990s.
