Well, longtime South Florida tech/death/whatever metal stalwarts Wykked Wytch are at it again — they’ve released a new single, and it’s yet another cover. The last one was their version of the overdone “Sweet Dreams,” and now, for whatever reason, they’ve decided to attack “Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence.
I understand that Wykked Wytch is going for that whole costumey Scandinavian sound. And they deserve major props for having a female singer/growler in an extreme scene that is not exactly super-welcoming to women. But my reaction to this cover and the accompanying video is: Why?
Why an Evanescence cover now? Why black-metal-ify yet another song? When a band plays a very distinct genre of music and uses it to cover a bunch of poppier songs, it cheapens the style and makes the whole thing look like a gimmick and a joke. Kind of like all those smooth reggae bands who churn out versions of Pop 40 tunes. Blegh. There should be a one-extreme-metal-version-of-a-popular-song limit per band per calendar year, at least.
Anyways, the video follows after the jump, and, warning, features a pretty literal depiction of a teenage girl cutting herself. Way to encourage ’em, folks. — Arielle Castillo
