Dwyane Wade’s ongoing custody battle has been one of the most glum personal stories in the NBA, and one that has largely been played in public through court records. Wade however recently opened up about his failed marriage to ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches-Wade in Jet magazine, and admits he was “probably a terrible husband.”
Wade married Fuches-Wade, his high-school sweetheart, and their first son was born while Wade was in college. The couple separated in 2007 and set off a long, seemingly never-ending court battle for both the terms of their divorce and custody of their two sons. The ordeal has been dramatic, involving shocking allegations and Fuches-Wade’s arrest. Wade now has full custody of the two children.
“I didn’t set out to get full custody but I wasn’t able to see my kids the way I wanted and I’m not a parent who’s going to run away from his responsibilities,” Wade said. “I was probably a terrible husband, but I pride myself on being a good dad.”
However, Wade hopes that one day he can settle the bad blood with his ex.
