Remember last year around this time? You know, when the Heat were actually playing basketball. Not very good basketball mind you, and fans thought that coach Erik Spoelstra was sure to get a pink slip? Well, he managed to turn things around and get the team to the Finals, and thanks to a new contract extension announced today, he should have plenty more chances to capture an NBA championship … or eight.
“Erik’s contract has been extended,” Pat Riley told the media today. “We have one of the great young coaches in the league.”
The exact contracts of Spoelstra’s contract were not divulged, but it’s believed that 2012 was the last year on his current agreement.
“We want him to become a Hall of Famer. So we took care of that,” said Riley. “He’s the perfect coach for this team. He never would have been a lame-duck coach.”
