We’ve got to be honest. Although our city plays host to a fair number of film festivals throughout the year, not all of them are worth attending. We’re not going to name names, but any old collection of ancient flicks from a distant land do not make for a memorable festival. The annual Brazilian Film Festival of Miami is one of the elite few that’s truly worth the box office price. Why? Because Brazilians know what a good fest is all about – movies, parties, celebrities, and fun. To kick off its eleventh year, the largest competitive showing of Brazilian movies held outside of Brazil is pulling out all the stops.
We’re talking about nine days of screenings at excellent local venues like the Colony Theater (1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach) and Miami Beach Cinematheque (512 Española Way, Miami Beach). The screenings and competition begin tomorrow. Tonight we party! Everyone is invited to the free opening bash at the North Beach Band Shell (7250 Collins Ave., North Miami Beach). There will be an outdoor screening of Carla Camurati’s Irma Vap: The Return, the film that was chosen as the festival’s 2006 Best Picture Public Choice. There will be a performance by the Brazilian Samba School at 6:00 p.m., and dancing all night to the sounds of DJ Marcelo. Visit www.brazilianfilmfestival.com for a complete schedule of events.
