Andreea Barbosa was born with two fully functioning uteruses, and she has put both to good work. On September 15, the 24-year-old Clearwater woman gave birth to two babies — one from each uterus. Doctors say the chances of such a pregnancy happening are one in 5 million.
Barbosa was diagnosed with uterus didelphys two years ago, according to the St. Petersburg Times. The uncommon condition sometimes leads to infertility, but in other cases it means the mother can conceive in both wombs at the same time.
Andreea and her husband Miguel conceived the children the old-fashioned way. Andreea had experienced a prior normal pregnancy when she gave birth to her first daughter, Izabella, two years ago.
Izabella is now the proud big sister of two siblings, a boy and a girl, Nathan and Natalie. The fraternal pair was born perfectly healthy.

About one in 2,000 women in the world have the condition, but the chances of a woman conceiving n both uteruses is incredibly rare. Both wombs would have to release eggs at the same time. Both would have to be fertilized, and both would need to develop into viable pregnancies. It’s not unheard of, though. In 2010, a Utah woman gave birth to two babies in separate wombs who were conceived at different times.
