The Miami Heat may be in danger of losing one of their hometown players. James Jones has informed the organization that he won’t be exercising the player option in his contract and will instead chose to become a free agent, reports The Miami Herald.

That doesn’t mean Jones won’t be back next year, it just makes it a bit less likely.

A graduate of American Senior High in Miami-Dade, Jones went on to play for the Miami Hurricanes. He’s one of only two former ‘Canes currently in the NBA.

Jones has been with the Heat since 2008, though injuries and relegation to the sidelines hampered his impact. However, Jones has finally started to deliver for the Heat this past season.

Though, the Heat aren’t exactly hurting in the small forward position. They do have LeBron James, but everyone needs a decent backup.
