Stop being such a girl. Author and playwright Eve Ensler wants to disarm that phrase as she did with the word cunt in The Vagina Monologues. After all, it’s almost as taboo to flash our feelings as it is to flash our lady parts. We’re conditioned to suppress vulnerability, compassion, and empathy, or as some call it — being a little bitch. And according to Ensler, society has to go into overdrive to squash these urges, because they are the default settings for everyone, not just those of us with ovaries. To inspire folks to embrace their inner girl, Ensler wrote I Am an Emotional Creature, 40 monologues about intense gals around the world. You might have seen the MTV spots where Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza reads Emotional Creature excerpts: “I want to touch you in real time, not find you on YouTube. I want to walk with you in the mountains, not friend you on Facebook,” she reads from the book’s “How to Be a Girl in 2010.” Hear Ensler deliver similar lines about the secret lives of girls Sunday when she appears at Books & Books.
