It’s nonstop Miami Hurricanes athletics news today. Mario Cristobal is leaving the Canes football staff less than two months after he was hired.
The former Florida International University head coach has been hired as Alabama’s offensive-line coach.
FIU stunned just about everyone by firing Cristobal after one disappointing season despite the fact that he had built the young program to new heights.
It seemed only natural that Cristobal — a former Miami assistant coach and player — would wind up on Miami’s payroll. On January 10, the Canes hired him as an assistant head coach and tight-ends coach. A crack recruiter, alumni, and local boy, he seemed like a dream fit.

But apparently the lure of Nick Saban (ugh) and the defending champs was too much for Cristobal.
This is the second time Saban has poached someone from Miami to fill the o-line coach role. Cristobal will replace Jeff Stoutland. Stoutland coached o-line at Miami from 2007 to 2010, and was interim head coach after Randy Shannon’s firing. Stoutland had originally come to Miami to replace Cristobal, who had taken over the head-coaching job at FIU. Stoutland is now working in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles.
