President Barack Obama will visit the main campus of Florida International University this afternoon to speak at a town hall meeting about immigration. He’ll sit down with TV news anchor Jose Diaz-Balart, and the event will air on Telemundo at 7 p.m. and on MSNBC at 8 p.m. Exciting stuff.

Of course, we all know presidential visits come with an inconvenient side effect: traffic delays. The president’s motorcade does not travel lightly or inconspicuously.

Here’s how local roadways might be affected.

Air Force One is scheduled to touch down at Miami International Airport at 2:45 p.m. today. The program is scheduled to begin around 3 p.m., which apparently means the president will make a mad dash from MIA to FIU. No road closures are scheduled, but it seems like it would be a safe bet to avoid the Dolphin Expressway and the general FIU area during that time.

Obama’s plane is expected to leave MIA at 5:05 p.m., right at the beginning of rush-hour traffic. Again, it would be wise to avoid the Dolphin between 4:30 and 5:05 p.m., especially the eastbound lanes.

FIU officials expect traffic congestion and parking problems on campus today and tell all students to give themselves extra time to arrive, especially for those who have class on the eastern side.

They also note that the entrance on SW 107th Avenue at 16th Street is expected to be closed during various times today.
