Seventies glamor-boy guitarist Peter Frampton will bring his Comes Alive! 35 tour to Hard Rock Live this Thursday.
Once blond and vacantly angelic, the star served a long apprenticeship as pop pinup and hard-rock guitar wizard before breaking ubiquitous in America’s bicentennial year with his frantically titled double LP, Frampton Comes Alive.
The blunderbuss glam of that album’s “Something’s Happening” is as gratuitous a display of Mott the Hoople-ism as you can quarry out of mid-’70s rock. Next, “Doobie Wah” is based on a purloined Doobie Brothers riff that carries us, by dint of fat and flashy picking, to “Show Me the Way.” Even today, you can still hear this megahit’s gargling talk-box effect jabbering from half the speakers in North America.
Eventually, the allure of quitting all this roller-disco jive-ass for the glories of “Do You Feel Like We Do” proves overwhelming. And with its Claptonoid guitar breaks, Bob Mayo’s twinkling digits at the keys, and the star choking that talk box into orgasmic bleats, Frampton Comes Alive‘s closing track remains one of the last great bong-gurgles of ’70s FM radio.
