Miami Today reports this week that Southeast supermarket giant Publix is planning to open a new store in the Edgewater/Omni area at 1776 Biscayne Blvd. This is perhaps one of the most needed grocery stores in all of Miami-Dade. While the grocer has opened an excessive amount of stores in South Beach and Brickell, it has ignored the booming midtown area.

The closest Publix that currently serves the area’s residents is located at 4870 Biscayne Blvd., near Miami’s Design District and Morningside. There is a low-end store, Price Choice, at 1851 NE Second Ave., where the staff is always warm and pleasant and the aisles are fairly clean. But the selection there is poor, leaving you to think, Why didn’t I just go to Publix?

According to Miami Today, the plans call for “48,200-square-foot supermarket, 251-space garage, and two adjacent retail spaces.”

No word yet from Publix about when groundbreaking or opening is planned.
