Sergio’s, the Cuban coffee shop on Coral Way that has become an institution since first flinging open its doors in 1975, is known for its medianoche, Cubano, and Elena Ruz sandwiches; hearty main-course fare such as vaca frita and boliche asado; frijoles negros; and all sorts of classic Cuban and Latin dishes. This is not diet food.

Now, however, comes Sergio’s La Flaca (“the skinny”) offerings. “These new menu items were developed with the overall health of our customers in mind,” explains a restaurant spokesman.

Soups, salads, and appetizers ($2.99 to $6.99) on this limited bill of fare — all less than 375 calories — include shrimp ceviche and whole-wheat empanadas with all-natural chicken breast inside.

Flatbread sandwiches ($4.99 to $6.75) are under 450 calories; the two entrées, grilled chicken with pico de gallo but no salt ($8.99) and grilled or blackened mahi-mahi (market price), clock in under 575 — including accompaniments of salad and choice of side. Sides are black beans, brown rice, or steamed vegetables.
