It always amuses us when so-called young people show their ageist underbelly. Yelling at old drivers on the highway. Glaring angrily and cussing under their breath as elderly shoppers slowly meander down the middle of the supermarket aisle. Making dismissive references to shuffleboard as the game of the aged. We’ll have you know that shuffleboard can actually be fun. And guess what, you smug bastards – someday soon, sooner than you dare to imagine – you’re gonna be old too. Here’s hoping that when you are, you have the fortitude and stamina to enter the Miami-Dade Senior Games.
The games are open to Miami-Dade County residents over the age of 50. “We started the competition last year as part of a bigger movement to get seniors to be active. This is a qualifier for the state final,” explains the director of events, Jason Cover. This year’s lineup includes the usual basketball, golf, swimming, and track-and-field events you might expect from any other Olympic-style sports competition. Due to popular demand, organizers added cycling, table tennis, ballroom dancing, and dominoes. You can cheer for your favorite grandma or grandpa at events all over the city, beginning with archery at 8:00 a.m. at the Everglades Archery Club, Visit www.miamisports.org for a complete schedule of events.
