Imagine a pack of boho gladiators slinging paint to live music in a pulsing, gritty arena while a rabid crowd cheers them on, and you have the bleeding-edge spectacle called Art Battles.
“It has become the eminent stage for every young artist out there,” boasts Fabian Bolanos, the event’s booking agent. “It’s the plateau of live art performance in America.”
Started in New York by a group of young graffiti rats out to knock art off the museum and gallery pedestal and claim it back for the streets, Art Battles is a fiercely competitive live challenge in which participants create their opuses while combating shoulder-to-shoulder, and the audience chooses the winner.
Now in its ninth season, with more than 100 live shows nationwide under its banner, Art Battles will kick off its national tour this Saturday at 8 p.m. at Wynwood’s Eazy Street Gallery before moving on to Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Dallas.
