It’s appropriate that the Miami Heat should have the 2008-09 season home opener on Halloween night. Last year’s abysmal 15-win season was a little like thinking you got a bag full of candy but discovering the neighbors gave you a bag of 25-cent condoms. And you went through all that trouble to dress like a hobo — again.
This year’s Heat promises to be at least a little more thrilling than last’s. That 15-win season was parlayed into drafting dynamic Kansas State forward Michael Beasley, who brings an exciting perimeter game to play alongside Dwyane Wade. Miami also has new head coach Eric Spoelstra stepping in to run things (until Pat Riley decides to un-retire again), as well as three-time All-Star Shawn “The Matrix” Marion at forward, and NCAA hero Mario Chalmers running the point. And of course there’s the newly minted Olympic gold medalist D-Wade, healthy and rejuvenated. On Friday night, this younger, new-look Heat takes on the Sacramento Kings at the American Airlines Arena. Tip-off is at 7:30. The kids are encouraged to come in Halloween costumes. Tickets range from $10 to $375; buy them at www.nba.com/heat.
