Los Angeles’s Umami Burger, a group of “fine-dining fast food” restaurants focused on that fifth savory taste, is setting up shop in Miami’s Design District at a new development called NE40th.
Umami founder and CEO, Adam Fleischman, who’s in town for the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, told Short Order he hopes to open the Miami location in time for Art Basel in 2012. Fleischman also owns Red Medicine in LA.
Miami attracted Fleischman because his parents live here and he got the interest of a developer to open in the Design District. Umami currently has six locations in LA, one in San Francisco and more restaurants on the way. The idea is to eventually open three to four locations in Miami.
So what makes Umami’s burger unique? “Really, we’re the only ones who
really do everything from scratch. We grind the meat and make buns from
scratch. So it has kind of an artisanal feel but it’s still affordable.
It also has an Asian flare to it,” said Fleischman.
